Homemade Laundry Detergent

I've mentioned in several posts that I've been itching to make my own laundry detergent for quite a while. I finally did it!  It was super simple and our laundry smells lemony and clean.  Follow the tutorial below to make your own!

It only requires three ingredients:  1 cup of 20 Mule Team Borax, 1 cup of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda, and 1 bar of Fels-Naptha laundry soap.  You'll also need a bowl, a grater, and a sealable container.

First, dump 1 cup of the 20 Mule Team Borax into your sealable container.

Then, add in 1 cup of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda.

Then comes the fun part...if you have adolescent children make this into a game!

You grate.  And you grate.  And you grate.  Sorry for my lack of make-up, but it's Saturday morning!

In reality, it only took ten minutes to grate the Fels-Naptha.  It smells like clean lemons.

Dump it all into your sealable container.

Mix well!  You'll only need 1.5 tablespoons per load of laundry!

This took maybe 15 minutes to create.  The 20 Mule Team Borax and the Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda were each under $4 and the Fels-Naptha bar was only $0.97!  The boxes of powders will last me a long time.  I'll update in a few weeks to let you know the actual cost per load.

Side notes:
  • Be sure you're mixing your detergent in an open area.  Breathing in Borax can be dangerous, so ventilation is important.  If this makes you feel uncomfortable, perhaps you could wear a mask.
  • Storing your laundry detergent in a sealable container is key--apparently the washing soda can convert to baking soda if left in the open air.
Next up...how to make your own fabric softener!
