I come from a long line of interesting eaters. For example: Grayson's favorite breakfast? Last night's leftover cornbread and milk. He eats it like cereal. Mom? She puts M&Ms in the bottom of her popcorn bowl. And my Dad? He puts a brownie in the bottom of his chili bowl. "Entree and dessert in one!"
Even my husband has some peculiar tastebuds...he puts slaw on his BBQ sandwiches. But that's another blogpost.
Obviously since we aren't picky eaters, dining out has never been an issue for us. In fact, the only issue we really have is choosing a place that suits all of our needs.
"I want ribs!"--Grayson
"Well, I want a burger!"--Dad
"I'll just nibble on some side items."--My mother
"Did somebody say Smithfields?!?"--Josh
"Can't we eat something healthy? Like a veggie wrap?"--Me (always the voice of reason)
At Walt Disney World, the dining options are nearly endless. There's something to please everybody, but there's really only one counter-service venue that can please everybody at the same time.
Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe.
This counter-service eatery (which is HUGE) is located in Tomorrowland at The Magic Kingdom. And when I say there's something for everybody, I do mean everybody. You see, Cosmic Ray's is divided into three different "bays."
Bay 1: Chicken
Bay 2: Burgers
Bay 3: Sandwiches
Let's begin with Bay 1:
Items in this area include rotisserie chicken, ribs, chicken nuggets, and a grilled chicken sandwich. Often, Dad will select the 1/2 Chicken and BBQ Rib combo and share his mashed potatoes and veggies with Mom. In my experience, the chicken has always been moist (yuck...hate that word) and flavorful and the ribs will fall off the bone they are so tender.
Items in this bay include burgers and hotdogs. Josh's favorite? The 1/3 Pound Deluxe Angus Cheeseburger topped with bacon and guacamole. My husband has a strange affinity for green mush (yuck). Also tasty is the chili cheese dog. It isn't up to The Varsity's dogs snuff, but it's decent.
One of the most popular things at Cosmic Ray's is the toppings bar which includes: lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, relish, green peppers, mushrooms, grilled onions, BBQ sauce, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, and cheese sauce. The toppings bar is complimentary, so in the words of David Phillips, "Eat all the pickles y'all want!"
Ah, my favorite bay! Why? Because it features wraps. Okay, it also has burgers and cheese steak sandwiches, but let's focus on the wraps. My favorite is the Turkey Bacon Wrap, and it is delish. Dip it in Ranch dressing and you're good to go. Even Josh, the consumate carnivore, enjoys this lighter fare.
So, you've got you're food (and if you're David Phillips, an extra plate loaded down with free toppings) and you're looking for a place to sit. My suggestion? Settle in on the main floor. Why? Because Sonny Eclipse, everybody's favorite Audio-Animatronic alien is playing and singing all of the best intergalactic hits. It's really entertaining and if you've got kids they'll love it.
So if you're waiting for that Fastpass to validate and need a quick, but quality bite to eat, stop by and see old Sonny Eclipse. His version of Earth Angel isn't half bad and the food is pretty tasty too.
